Automatic starting system for rowing and canoe-kayak
The system holds the bow of each boat in a gate mounted on the start line, so every crew leaves from the same position. The gates align to within 5 mm of the line, submerge in 0.1 s at the start command and return to the holding position in 5 s with 0.5 mm repeatability, which allows up to ten starts a minute in a dense regatta programme.
The frame is aluminium with stainless steel fittings, and a complete line travels on a trailer or in a 20 ft (6 m) container. Installation from the shore takes two to four people and 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on weather; towing runs at about 30 minutes per 500 m of line and re-installation after towing at 30 minutes per line. Maintenance is once a year. The rowing configuration follows the FISA lane width of 13.5 m, the canoe-kayak configuration the ICF width of 9 m.
