Video distance measurement system for ski jumping
VDMS replaces the visual judgement of jump length with a measurement taken from video. Four high definition cameras are assembled in a line beside the jumping hill, each covering 15 to 25 m of the landing zone, so the whole zone is in frame regardless of how far a competitor flies. The four streams are captured synchronously and processed uncompressed, and the video reaches the rack over fibre optic.
The cameras can be operated remotely, with optical 10x zoom, shutter speeds to 1/10,000 s, manual iris and gain, and an infrared mode for the light conditions of a night competition. The software handles the measurement itself and carries backup and archiving functions for the jury record. The system is in accordance with FIS regulations.
