Linesman’s flag

The flag the assistant referee raises for offside, for a throw-in and for a substitution. The cloth is chequered yellow and red, a pattern chosen because it stays readable against a crowd, against grass and against the advertising boards behind the touchline.

The handle is plastic and the flag is held in one hand throughout the match.
