Landing pits
A landing pit takes the work a mat cannot: dismounts from the high bar, giant swings, vault elements learned at full difficulty. The full built-in pit needs a minimum depth of 0.62 m and absorbs in three stages, a 20 cm very soft polyurethane safety mat on top, interlocking cellular foam sections in the middle and an interface support mat that cancels the rebound; a grating under the whole area isolates the foam from the floor and lets it ventilate. The suspended pit needs 1.20 m and works on a knot-free synthetic net tensioned by looped bungee cords on zinc-coated steel hooks, with nylon straps and snap hooks to re-tension it.
Every type is finished with a washable class M1 stretch jersey cover held down by a removable moulded PVC edge, so the cover can be taken off, cleaned and re-tensioned. The top of the suspended pit stands 20 cm above the floor, level with FIG mats, which keeps the landing area visible and lets the gymnast walk out of it. The traditional cube pit needs 1.50 m and is filled with foam cubes in three sizes over 600 mm cross-groove foam blocks; raised pits are built above the floor on a platform with a wooden guard rail, and the apparatus stand on the platform so their working height matches.
